In this article, we explain several ways to optimally secure your BTC Direct account and e-mail account.
1. Securing your BTC Direct account
Securing your BTC Direct account is crucial for preventing unauthorized access. Cybercriminals often target cryptocurrency platforms, so following the best security practices ensures your account remains safe and protected from potential threats.
2. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an extra layer of security that requires not only your password but also a unique code sent to your phone or authenticator app. This helps protect your account even if your password is compromised.
How to enable 2FA on your registered email (e.g., Hotmail, Gmail):
- Gmail: Go to your Google Account > Security > 2-Step Verification, and follow the instructions.
- Hotmail (Outlook): Visit your Microsoft Account settings > Security > Advanced security options, and turn on 2FA.
Enabling 2FA on your email is crucial because your email is used for password recovery or receiving login alerts, making it a prime target for attackers.
BTC Direct does not currently offer 2FA. Click here to read our article about this.
3. A strong and unique password for your BTC Direct account
A strong password is your first line of defense. Follow these tips:
- Length: At least 12 characters long
- Complexity: Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters (!@#$%^&*)
- Uniqueness: Don't reuse passwords from other accounts.
Password Manager Tip: Consider using a password manager like LastPass or 1Password. They generate and store complex passwords securely, so you don't have to remember them all.
4. A strong password for your email account
Your email account is the gateway to most of your online activities, including access to your BTC Direct account. A compromised email account can lead to an attacker gaining control over your BTC Direct account by resetting your password.
Ensure that your email password is:
- Strong and unique (do not reuse passwords)
- Protected with 2FA for additional security
5. When you suspect unauthorized access to your BTC Direct account
If you notice any suspicious activity or believe your account has been compromised, take these steps immediately:
- Change Passwords: Change your BTC Direct password and your email password.
- Enable 2FA (if not already enabled): Secure your email account with 2FA for an extra layer of security.
- Contact BTC Direct Support: Report the incident immediately so we can assist you further.
